Discover Tenerife
Tenerife is a beautiful island in the Atlantic Ocean that is appealing at any time of year, but especially during the cold winter months when the mild weather feels especially luxurious.
The temperature is usually above 20 degrees, and the
varied tropical landscape yields rewarding secrets beneath the perpetual sun.
Relax in a chic beach resort, explore the varied terrain, surf on black-sand beaches, descend vertigo-inducing
gorges, and eat fresh fish – there are 785 square miles to create your adventure.
Before you go, here's everything you need to know.
North and south are worlds apart.
Tenerife's two main cities are Santa Cruz, the capital, and La Laguna, the former capital.
Despite being only a half-hour drive apart, the landscapes are vastly different; the south is desert-like and dry, while the north is
tropical and lush. The south attracts the majority of visitors, with its endless golden sandy beaches and guaranteed sun, but the north offers a more wild experience, with black volcanic-sand beaches, many of which are only accessible on foot.
Bring your hiking boots
Mount Teide, a volcano that last erupted in 1909, is Spain's highest peak and the world's third largest volcanic structure. At 3718m, you must apply ahead of time for a free permit to hike to the summit, but the lower side of the volcano is accessible, and there is a cable car that will take you to the Rambleta station, which is less than 660 feet from the summit. On a clear day, you can see as far as four other islands: Gran Canaria, La Palma, El Hierro, and La Gomera.
The volcano and surrounding area were designated a National Park in 1954 and a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007. Hike the dozens of trails through the arid, desert-like landscape, where harsh environmental conditions have resulted in the survival of 12 endemic species unique to the island, such as the stunning alhel flowers.
Another area worth carrying hiking boots for is the fairy forest of the Anaga Mountains, as well as descending the Masca gorge for a unique view of the cliffs of Los Gigantes.
For cheap eats, go to the guachinches
Guachinches, which are traditionally found in the island's north, are makeshift restaurants that arose from the need for wine producers to sell their product. Pitch in to try the house wine and enjoy some homemade food prepared by the woman and served in small portions as tapas to complement the booze. To name a few, plates may include chickpeas (garbanzos), rabbit (conejo en salmorejo), goat's meat (carne de cabra), or spiced pork (carne de fiesta).
Guachinches are typically small and simple, often housed in converted garages, and are excellent places to discover Tenerife's local soul. Guachapp can help you find the best ones, or if you trust your instincts, look for signs that say "guachinche" or "se vende vino" (wine is sold here).
In La Laguna, immerse yourself in the local culture.
La Laguna is a colonial town founded in the late 15th century that serves as one of the island's primary cultural
hubs. La Laguna, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1999, is an elegant, colorful, and
predominantly low-rise town where the university is located.
The main streets are pedestrianized, making it easier to explore historic structures like the San Miguel chapel, the cathedral, the convent of Santa Catalina de la Siena, and the Nava Palace. Surprisingly, La Laguna's city planning laid the groundwork for many Latin American colonial cities that were modeled after it.
